I believe there are two issues here.
1) Trump is willing to change sides; abandon Europe and Ukraine, and regularize trade and investment with Russia. I assume this is because there are even more mineral opportunities available to the trump family and associates there; similar to what happened with the Saudi’s.
2) Adding tariffs to 42% of our imports (Canada, Mexico & China) will raise prices; but it will not bring back American manufacturing since the parts are imported too. Krugman’s recent piece on neglected regions is insightful. There are no easy fixes; but I think this misses the point. The purpose of dismantling government (including the education department, consumer protection and USAID) and adding tariffs is theater. It justifies a $1.5 trillion tax cut, where $1.1 trillion goes to the top .01% of tax payers, (those making more than $1.1 million annually).
I agree with your assessment of Ukrainians. They want to drive the invaders from their country and are constantly innovating. They manufactured 1.3 million drones last year and are aiming to produce 2 million this year. They need artillery ammunition, Patriot missile batteries, and more planes; (No soldiers) but they don’t need to give away $350 billion in rare earths without security guarantees. Hopefully Europe now realizes that the US President is corrupt; and the YS vote in the UN with Russia, Belarus, N. Korea, and Iran shows where our allegiance lies.
Greenland, Panama, and Taiwan should be worried. The US no longer supports American values. It is becoming a kleptocracy where Musk getting $8 million/day in US contracts ends USAID; and threatens any Republican with a fully funded primary opponent should they vote their stated values.
I also do not see a light at the end of this tunnel, at least not in the next 2 years…
